Bleak House

We just watched the last episode of Bleak House on PBS. If you haven’t been watching this, look for a rerun. This was so good. Who thought Dickens was watchable?
One wants to focus on Gillian Anderson—who was fabulous—because you recognize her, but the whole cast was superb. The writing was seemless and the direction totally unnoticeable. After each episode, J. and I were frustrated that there wasn’t more. This was better than any movie we’ve seen all year, save for Brokeback Mountain.
Lady Dedlock. Poor Esther.

What Does One Do With Chenille?

Just asking. It looks nice, but it knits up sort of clunky.

No Machine Knit This

Baby Birch Completed, Unblocked

Obviously.

It’s unblocked, btw. I’m pleased how it turned out. The wonkiest bits are up near the edge you can’t see.
The Kidsilk Haze is indeed not stretchy, which is a pain on the multitude of k2tog’s and k2tog tbl’s. It does tend to hold its shape though when ripping back, at least when it’s not clinging to itself. Which is inevitable when you apparently cannot count to three.
The pattern is relatively simple; the yarn makes this more difficult. The pattern would work nicely in a non-clingy yarn too.

Tired, But Not Going to Bed

I’m still slogging away at Baby Birch, but after 13½ hours at work yesterday and 10½ today, progress has slowed.
The five-foot mound of snow in front of our driveway has shrunk considerably, but is still there despite four days of 50° F weather. It’s amazing how much of the snow is left. Not that it is still snow colored.

Cars Under Snow

Mine’s the one on the left.
Just as well. The city just plowed all of the snow from the bus stop into spot in front of our driveway. Good thing I don’t drive to work.
This was from about 1pm this afternoon. It was still snowing two hours later.
The trudge to work should be fun tomorrow. Do I take extra pants, or walk with garbage bags covering my legs?

All a Blur

February, 2006, Snow StormIt has now been snowing for over sixteen hours. This is a relatively light period of snow at about 7am. Yes, it really is that murky.

I spent a good deal of yesterday once again playing with MySQL and PHP and HTML putting together a web-fronted database to inventory my stash. I’ve got the data-entry bit down pat, but haven’t touched the update or reporting bits. I’ve also catalogued the yarn in the living room and in the office, including the mystery box in the closet. The bedroom closet awaits.

This blur is my latest WIP:

I’m practicing for Birch, so this is Baby Birch, with a 149 st. cast-on instead of 299. This is far from perfect, but it is recognizable as lace. I have high hopes for blocking.
Question: The kidsilk haze is difficult to see against the steel of the Addi Turbo and slippery too. Would I be better off with darker wood-tipped circs?

I need to cast on something simpler, though. I can’t knit lace and watch the Olympics.

The forecast is now for 12-24 in. of snow (30-60cm), not as bad a what Ted got, but we’re going nowhere, nonetheless.

Don’t Try This at Home

Ever wonder what would happen should you forget to put the carafe under the drip spot of your coffeemaker, should you have one of those that stops dripping when you remove the carafe? Eventually coffee plus grounds everywhere. Guess how I found out?
