Outclassed

Today, for dinner, I made chili, which was quite good, but J made this:

196_cake.jpeg

It’s so good.

This is the Week-End cake from The Art of the Cake by Bruce Healy and Paul Begat, which Mom (my mom) sent him for his birthday. Good choice, Mom.
J, btw, both art-directed and shot this photo.
Those are pistachios on top and almonds on the side, with a rum glaze over an apricot base on a lemon-flavored pound cake.

Blech!

We just watched Star Wars III. Catwoman was so much better. **hurl**

**hurl** Anyone who thinks Natalie Portman can act hasn’t seen episodes I, II and III. Or maybe they were just comparing her to **hurl** Hayden What’s-his-(never-to-be-seen-again-I-hope)-face.

Samuel L. Jackson gives new meaning to wooden.
And those were the bright spots.
Not that Ewan McGregor isn’t still cute.

A Quick One

After I finish something that takes a while, I need a quick project, so this morning I did this:

190_bag.jpeg

It’s a little gift bag kit out of a partial ball of Sugar ‘n Cream cotton in cream color. It was easy, basically a baby hat with eyelet holes and a drawstring.

The Sugar ‘n Cream is not one of my favorite yarns, though the final effect is not bad. I’m off cotton, I guess. The small bit that remains will be fine for tying up newspapers.

I have three different brands of cotton worsted in shades of white. It all looks like expensive kitchen twine, even when knit.
Next up: Socks, I hope.
Note: I fixed the display of pictures with links. Only pictures that are links have borders now; those that aren’t do not.

Ribbed Scarf for Myself

I have finish my scarf.

193_rib.jpeg

This was pretty simple, but the yarn and the colors work really well.
Specifics:

Yarn: Filatura di Crosa Zara extra fine merino

  • Olive - 1661, very slightly over one ball
  • Moss - 1503, 1 ball
  • Charcoal - 1469, 1 ball

Needles Inox 3.75mm (US 5) straights

Pattern:

Cast on 38 in Olive with cable cast on.(RS) K1, sl1 wyif, (k4, p2) five times, k4, sl1 wyif, k1.

Sl1 wyif, k1, (p4, k2) five times, p4, k1, sl1 wyif.

Repeat for a total of 16 rows.

Switch to Moss and continue for 16 rows.

Switch to Charcoal and continue for 16 rows.

Repeat color bands until desired length, ending with Olive. [I have 8 bands of Olive and 7 each of Moss and Charcoal.]

Bind off on wrong side.

Weave in ends and block.

Drool

Really good cookie recipes in the December Martha Stewart Living. Bourbon Pecan Chews and something very chocolate. J’s making me fat.

Romeo & Juliet

In J’s version, a la Sims 2, Mercutio and Tybalt fall in love and get married, but still have a knockdown fight at their own wedding when Romeo proposes to Juliet.

888 Days Until I Turn Fifty

Provided I post this before 6:47 CST tomorrow morning.
So, I’m morbid.
I’ve forgotten gift-making and turned to making a scarf for myself, considering that winter will probably show up sometime. It’s hard to tell. It’s a nice scarf, manly and plain, but good colors (sorry, no pictures yet). It’s so boring to knit: k4p2 ad infinitum.
Rome was so depressing tonight. Caesar murdered and all. Please don’t accuse me of giving away the plot. Where’d you think it was going? And there’s nothing on HBO or Sunday nights for months!
